Assessing Fuel Levels In Public Forests

Assessing Fuel Levels in Public Forests

The U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management have completed an impressive series of regional reports that estimate the amount of woody biomass that must be removed from publicly owned forests in order to reduce the looming risk of catastrophic wildfire.

The two agencies are using a reporting model called CROP - Coordinated Resource Offering Protocol - originally developed in 2003 by Oregon-based Mater Engineering. Since 2006, about 20 CROP assessments covering more than 50 million acres have been completed. Click here to go to the "Biomass" section and view the results as Power Point presentations.
