We have been deluged by responses to Barry Wynsma's thoughtful essay on Forest Service leadership - or the lack thereof. Provided here is some feedback on the essay.
W.V. "Mac" McConnell writes from Florida. He is a U.S. Forest Service retiree whose Power Point presentations have appeared on our website many times. His latest efforts are nearby: an updated version of his earlier "Timber Resource Management" Power Point and a fascinating photograph, "One Landscape: Four Views," that shows what is happening on adjacent public and private forests at Deep Creek, near Townsend, Montana.
Editor's comment concerning Mike Petersen's (Executive Director - Lands Council) Response To Dr. Tom Bonnicksen's Essay, "Death Of A Forest: Why We Should Care"
Keith Olson is the executive director of the Montana Logging Association; an organization that represents approximately 600 family-owned timber harvesting businesses throughout Montana’s forested regions. As such, these are the folks that harvest and transport the majority of timber from forest to mill in Montana.
Mr. Olson was born in Minnesota, raised and educated in Oregon, and spent most of his professional career in the Rocky Mountain west.
He received a degree in forest management from Oregon State University in 1969; and his early work experience includes five years as a corporate forester in Oregon—followed by seven years as a consulting forester in Idaho—before taking over the reins of the Montana Logging Association in 1980.
