Patrick Heffernan of the Montana Wood Products Association asks some timely – if not very uncomfortable questions – concerning the EPA’s rush to implement new greenhouse gas standards that would again work a hardship on those who grow and harvest the nation’s wood fiber. We’ve been writing about this problem in its various incantations for years. How, for example, is it possible for an agency of the United States Government to conclude [with a straight face] that energy created from burning woody biomass is not renewable? Or that carbon dioxide – which trees absorb – is a public health hazard? As usual, Heffernan, who we’ve known for many years, hits the nail on the head.
