FROM THE EDITOR
Craig Rawlings
Dear Readers:

I just traveled north with James Stephens of Blue Marble Biomaterials to introduce him to the folks at Algae AquaCulture, which has a closed loop biorefinery in Columbia Falls, Montana. Blue Marble takes agricultural waste and produces renewable chemicals for industrial use (click here to see a recent Missoulian article on this company). Algae AquaCulture converts waste wood chips to electricity and heat, and carbon dioxide is then used to grow algae that will be converted into organic fertilizer. Helping forest product innovators network and building collaboration among local Montana forest products businesses is something I do as part of my work with the BitterRoot Economic Development District.

Blue Marble's efforts in the state could possibly create up to 80 jobs in Missoula, and Algae AquaCulture's exciting work will most certainly generate high-paying jobs in the future as its efforts gain attention and traction. With our forestry sector hard hit in Montana (much like it is across the U.S.), it's awfully nice to see job creation and new technologies literally brewing beneath my feet.

Best wishes,

Craig Rawlings
