W.V. "Mac" McConnell writes from Florida. He is a U.S. Forest Service retiree whose Power Point presentations have appeared on our website many times. His latest efforts are nearby: an updated version of his earlier "Timber Resource Management" Power Point and a fascinating photograph, "One Landscape: Four Views," that shows what is happening on adjacent public and private forests at Deep Creek, near Townsend, Montana.

SFI and FSC Certification in North America - A Summary Comparison

Third party forest certification has its skeptics.  Count us among them.  Not because we don't believe private timberland owners should get credit for the good work they do - providing our nation with wood fiber and a wealth of quite diverse wildlife habitat - but because certificaiton has had undesirable political undercurrents since its inception more than a decade ago.  Nevertheless, we are pleased to provide this very informative comparison of the two most common certification systems used in the United States: SFI and FCS.  Click below for the certification report.
