We have been deluged by responses to Barry Wynsma's thoughtful essay on Forest Service leadership - or the lack thereof. Provided here is some feedback on the essay.
Marks Lumber Company President, Steve Marks, Clancy, Montana, has written an open letter to Montana's state and federal delegations in which he asks a question that is very much on the minds of most Montanans: Why aren't the dead trees that are falling to the ground in Montana's federally owned forests being utilized?
It's a question we've asked many, many times since 1990 - thus far to no avail.
Nevertheless, Mr. Marks, who is an Evergreen Foundation sponsor, asks some very valid questions in his letter. He sent copies of his letter to 11 Montana newspapers, plus the Associated Press. Thus far, only the Missoulian has seen fit to publish his letter.
The situation Mr. Marks describes is not unique to Montana. Sadly, it repeats itself in federally-owned forests all over the West.
