We have been deluged by responses to Barry Wynsma's thoughtful essay on Forest Service leadership - or the lack thereof. Provided here is some feedback on the essay.
W.V. "Mac" McConnell writes from Florida. He is a U.S. Forest Service retiree whose Power Point presentations have appeared on our website many times. His latest efforts are nearby: an updated version of his earlier "Timber Resource Management" Power Point and a fascinating photograph, "One Landscape: Four Views," that shows what is happening on adjacent public and private forests at Deep Creek, near Townsend, Montana.
Editor's comment concerning Mike Petersen's (Executive Director - Lands Council) Response To Dr. Tom Bonnicksen's Essay, "Death Of A Forest: Why We Should Care"
In April, 2009, the Wilderness Society published a report titled, "Wood Products and Carbon Storage:Can Increased Production Help Solve the Climate Crisis?" Among the report's questionable conclusions is a claim that "an increased use of wood fuels and lumber will have very little effect on climate change." Now four scientists whose work we admire have come teamed with Dovetail Partners to produce a critique of the Society's report. Among its conclusions: "Unfortunately, what is promoted as a scientific evaluation of the carbon storage/wood products issue is deeply flawed. Whether intended or not, the net effect (of the Wilderness Society report) is a muddying of the waters on the issue of carbon storage and wood products under the guise of science."
