W.V. "Mac" McConnell writes from Florida. He is a U.S. Forest Service retiree whose Power Point presentations have appeared on our website many times. His latest efforts are nearby: an updated version of his earlier "Timber Resource Management" Power Point and a fascinating photograph, "One Landscape: Four Views," that shows what is happening on adjacent public and private forests at Deep Creek, near Townsend, Montana.

Because of its close connection to the Obama Administration's numerous renewable fuels initiatives, woody biomass is currently generating considerable public discussion. There is controversy surrounding the regulatory definition of woody biomass. Some members of Congress believe woody biomass removed from federal forests should not be included in the definition, which would mean that woody biomass harvested from overstocked and dying federally-owned forests would not qualify for renewable fuels funding. We are monitoring related events as well as the growing body of woody biomass research and will report our findings in this section of our website.
