We have been deluged by responses to Barry Wynsma's thoughtful essay on Forest Service leadership - or the lack thereof. Provided here is some feedback on the essay.
Few topics have been reported in greater depth on the pages of Evergreen Magazine than those related to wildfire. We have been at the forefront in the often rancorous debate over what to do about the West's wildfire crisis since 1990. In that time, the frequency and destructive power of wildfires - especially those that burn annually in western federal forests - has increased exponentially. We do not believe this crisis is a natural event. Nor do we expect this alarming trend will correct itself. Congress must fund programs that reduce forest density, especially in dry-site forests in the Interior West. Until stand density is reduced, insect and disease infestations will continue to set the stage for increasingly destructive wildfire. In this section, we will keep you abreast of wildfire-related issues and events.
