The porch sign - untouched - a small irony, or maybe a reminder.

Believe

Dear readers,

A brief note to let you know we have been a little quiet this week for a very human reason: during the wind storms that hit our area, a tree came down on our house. Everyone is safe, wonderful folks showed up to help us, and the damage was minimal. We are deeply grateful.

This comes on the heels of a recent car crash, and we want to pause to thank those of you who have reached out to check on us. Your notes, messages, and simple kindness matters more than you may know.

Moments like this slow things down—but they also sharpen perspective, reminding us to pay attention, be present, and give thanks for what holds. To believe that even in the face of what seems insurmountable - things work out.

In a similar way, Evergreen’s work is about paying attention: to forests, to risk, to resilience, and to the systems—both natural and human—that quietly support us when something unexpected happens. Finding a way.

We will be back with new pieces shortly. In the meantime, as the year draws to a close, thank you for staying connected—and for supporting independent, science-based forestry journalism that endures through both calm and chaos.

Your subscriptions and year-end donations make this work possible, and they matter.

With gratitude,
Julia Petersen
